Everything was historic about Barack Obama’s election four years ago. And I’m not even talking about his skin color! A recession of epic proportions, a country seriously doubting its prospects, and the voters longing for change. It would have been the ideal time for the country to come together, seven years after 9-11, and work hard to solve the problems. However, that was not the case.
It was also historical how brutal the opposition was towards not only the President, but also towards the Presidency. Obama was slapped with all kinds of labels – Muslim, Kenyan, Socialist, Dictator, Communist… The list goes on and on. At a time when bipartisan cooperation was needed the most, the top most priority of the Republicans was to make Obama a one-term President.
The same GOP that happily voted for the PATRIOT Act, perhaps one of the most intrusive government meddling into our lives, was now complaining about how bad government. The same GOP that happily raised the debt ceiling time after time under George Bush was now railing against doing the same under Obama. The same GOP that happily voted to go to two unfunded wars, give massive tax breaks to the super rich, and expand medicare without an iota of consideration about the national debt was now decrying Obama’s Stimulus to stave off the greatest economic calamity of our lifetimes.
All this went on while the Republicans projected themselves to be the morally-correct, god-loving, patriots while branding the Democrats as a group that had no affinity for God, faith or their country.
Fast forward four years, and the United States has turned the corner. The recovery, though slow, is real and is here to stay, regardless of what the Republicans say. And, as their sham is exposed, it is becoming more and more apparent that a majority of the American people trust President Obama to lead the country for four more years.
The next 60 days are indeed going to be very interesting!
